I used to be a trash man & we got paid the same amount per day no matter how many hrs we worked so the goal was to get off early as possible so it became like a competition. We’d lift 15-20 tons a day while running to each bin trying to get done quick The more I learn about training the more I realize how lethal that job was when it came developing speed, strength & explosiveness. The variability was a huge component to the results I got. I wasn’t even that athletic before I started that job & now a few years later I’m a professional athlete

Reminds me of what I observed in 1987 at the old La Laker forum in Inglewood. Us vs Ussr volleyball. The Soviets came out on the court for warm-up and performing "flips" (forward and backward) and the executing a "skill" such as a "dig". The setter was performing "windmills"-one arm going one way and the opposite AND THEN SWITCH!

This is great! Thanks so much for sharing this discussion, Joel. I think it tends to get tough to find balance between specificity/adaptation focus and variability/expression focus... Unfortunately, the later is difficult to quantify and numbers "pay the bills" so to speak. But I don't think it's fun to create robots and I know I got into sports as a kid because of how I got to express myself through movement. To me the status quo has become to believe that 3x15 of an isolation exercise is the way to "fix" your ailment because we just don't have the time to acknowledge or deal with any sort of complexity - even though I'd say complexity is something you can't ignore if you want more optimal outcomes. Bernstein, for instance, has made us aware for some time that movement is complex and even experts have variability... And further, some variability is likely necessary for sustainability and stability over time. But again, how do you go about negotiating all of this?

Look at his legs. It would be 2,45 m at its maximum. Let us be realistic :) I definitely do not believe that it could be a +2,45 m jump (but I may be wrong).
